Logical Fallacies
Watch the following video:
http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/thu-june-28-2007/immigrant-disease
Look at the different logical fallacies that you see in the video. Find a video, news article, or interview that has at least one of fallacies depicted in the video. Post a link to your found source, and then name and define the fallacy you noticed in your source.
Post your initial post by Wednesday, October 9th. Post your reply to a classmate by Friday, October 11th.
Your reply should address your classmate's source. Respond by listing at least one additional fallacy your classmate might have missed, and why you think the fallacy should be addressed, or respond by addressing whether or not you believe your classmate has rightly addressed his/her fallacy in his/her source.
As always, stay professional with your classmates.

ReplyDeletenon sequitur- comparing two completely separate things, if you don't vote prop ten, you hate children
sweeping- because they generalize all large corporations
argument ad populum- appeals to their family values
either/ or fallacy- reduced the situation from a complicated argument about business, to you agree or you hate children
You listed all the ones I saw. non sequitar was the big one in the video I think. To a watcher not really paying attention the connection might make sense and trick the viewer to believing them... and it definitely woud work against the South Park residents.
DeleteThe first and foremost thing that I would like to comment on is the fact that I understand what the segment in the Daily Show was trying to accomplish, but I found it extremely offensive, even for an attempt at humor. It could possibly be my lousy sense of humor, or the fact that I have many Mexican people whom I have the honor to work with and they are stand up guys just trying to earn a living for their families like everyone else. I found the clip to have multiple fallisies, the majority of them being hasty generalizations. I'm sorry to get sensitive on a comedy clip, but I was never into the slapstick comedy; it makes me sick.

ReplyDeleteIn the daily show with John Stewart, one fallacy that stands out to me is John Hodgen stating that immigrants are bringing in diseases such as leprathy and tuberculosis. This fallacy is a post hoc fallacy. Here is an example that I found.

ReplyDeleteColbert uses red herring very often because he makes constant jokes and distractions to bring people away from the point and focus on the laughs and assuming that whatever he is actually talking about is true. He also uses the Argument ad populum and flattery approach by speaking directly to the audience with the general consensus of ideas viewed by people who watch his show, especially the views that are obviously agreed upon, such as, love for freedom or need for money. He uses the bandwagon fallacy by essentially saying if you agree with me you are smart too. The red herring goes often along with Argument ad hominem by switching the argument into something clever and funny against the actual person about something that doesn't matter, such as style or hair.

ReplyDeleteFalse Analogy
One fallacy that it could also fall in to may be the hasty generalizations? The conclusion that the shoes make everyone have these abilities.
DeleteThis has a series of fallacies with explanation of the fallacie. I thought the Old spice one was a classic. Just my opinion.

I was not able to view this video but when I recall all the Old Spice commercials, they pretty much do explain themselves sometimes. I have to admit though as well, sometimes they come up with random things to put for there commercials. I guess it works though if I can recall them so well.
DeleteIn the daily show with John Stewart, one fallacy that stands out to me is John Hodgen stating that immigrants are bringing in diseases such as leprosy and tuberculosis. This fallacy is a post hoc fallacy. A post hoc fallacy is "after this, therefore because of this", is a logical fallacy that states "Since Y event followed X event, Y event must have been caused by X event." I found this video sort of offensive. I agree with the whole immigrants and that if they want to earn a living then at least do it the right way. I also agree that maybe they could be bringing over diseases since they are probably not vaccinated or healthy to begin with. I am for that though. This just didn’t have post hoc fallacies but it also contained hasty generalizations.
