Rhetorical Analysis

I know, it's not the "I Have a Dream" speech, but not everyone is Dr. King, but people make speeches all of the time for different reasons that can be inspiring (or not, depending on how you interpret each message).

For your initial response: determine the Audience, Purpose and Occasion for the following video, and then note whether or not Kutcher uses ethos, logos and pathos in his speech, and how he uses the elements you identify. Finally, say whether or not you think he was effective in his speech, and why (ex. how did he format his speech to help build his logos or ethos? How could he have better formatted his speech and why?).

In your reply: ask your classmate a question about his/her post regarding his/her thought-process regarding one or more of the determinations he/she makes (ex. "Do you really think his audience was the people sitting at the Teen Choice Award or sitting at home?).

  1. I thought that this was a powerfull speach. His intent was to use logic and personal life experiences. Even though he lightened things up for a moment, it wasn't meant to be comical. He addresses the audience of mainly young teens, by speaking in a common language. He's Ashton, and at that day and age, he would have got his message across anyway. I feel his speach was formatted excellently for the ocassion and the audience. It should be left alone.

    1. I think your right on the part of him trying not to be comical about this. He uses a little sense of humor to try to lighten up the mood and I think he may also use it to grab peoples attention. It amazes me that he says such an encouraging speech and doing it in such a short time. He used the time wisely just to get that message out and he did very well.

  2. The audience would be the actually audience but more in general to teens trying to make a living or difference in life. I think the purpose of this is to encourage young ones that they may go through a difficult time in their life but as long as they continue to take opportunities and work hard, they will achieve something that they wouldn’t expect in life. I think he uses his personal experience and emotions to try to encourage this on younger teens. I think his speech could be inspiring to young teens to try to take more opportunities because what could you become if you don’t take those opportunities. He also says that he never took a job that he thought he was better than. He took them and just did the job.
